There was a time the a single lager would cause a hangover unequal to any pain and discomfort imaginable by 16oz. of a "light" beer. I thought that the problem was some allergy to alcohol in general and thus, gave up drinking for a time.
Enter the world of craft beer, however, and I discovered that not all beers are created equal. And so, I began my search to try and pinpoint just what it was in certain beers that caused me so much pain while others did not.
Over 6 years later, I am no closer to finding an answer. Yet, a curious thing happened on my journey --- I discovered a whole world and community as obsessed as I was with an ancient commodity being produced enmasse across the world in all sorts of creative ways.
With over a thousand different beers tried, and dozens of different styles discovered, I have come across a new way for beer to mock me --- hype!
Whether it is online ticket sales for beer festivals or in-person lines for beer releases, I often find myself cursing this passion of mine for driving me to do things I never thought I would simply in the name of beer.
As much as I try to separate myself from the newest of the new and the craftiest of the craft, I'm always drawn to spending time, money, and energy in pursuit of being on the cutting edge of all things beer.
My goal, however, is to embrace the love I have for this thing that continually hates me no matter how hard I try to enjoy it.
