Drinking Beers Blind - Part II

I know that I'm not the only one trying this whole blinded beer thing, there are blind beer events going on all over the country. From festivals to beers weeks to private group tastings. Or, like me, you're a part of an online beer forum that trades random boxes of beers with varying themes to them. If that is something to your liking, then check out talkbeer.com. Now onto, beer #2.

At first pour, this beer is about as dark as I expected it to be. With the only hint that this beer is >10.0% abv, I assumed it would be a barrel-aged brew. Likely a stout.

The immediate aroma heightens that barrel-aging suspicion I had. It doesn't permeate booze right out the gate, but there is definite alcohol present in the aroma.

The taste is instant sweetness. It's a chocolatey stout, not a coffee one so much. There's some vanilla, maybe a little spice, but mostly wood, char, and spirits. I likey!

It's sweet as all hell though. A little sticky in the mouth, but not so much that I need water in between pours.

At +10.0% abv, I'm gonna just shoot for the star and say that this is a Goose Island Bourbon County variant. There isn't so much alcohol present that it's a newer bottle, So I'll guess that this is a vintage Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout. I've had them fresh and the coffee was never overpowering. So, the fact that I believe this to be a few years old would account for the lack of coffee present and dominance of chocolate and vanilla.

Whatever it is though, I'd drink it again for sure! 8/10

And would ya lookie that, there was some coffee in there after all! Pipeworks Brewing Mocha Abduction.

Not sure why I was so certain that this was barrel-aged. Perhaps it was the overt sweetness and chocolate added that I mistook for bourbon characteristics.

I've had Cherry Truffle and Regular Abduction from Pipeworks Brewing before and I can honestly say that I like this better than both. The vanilla is so much more present and that's my kinda jam here. Now I suppose I just gotta try that Orange variant to catch 'em all!
